A calculator built for herringbone
Herringbone is difficult to estimate with a square-foot formula because alternating paver orientation creates a repeating zigzag and many edge intersections. This calculator generates the pavers as separate rectangles, applies the selected joint width and clips every unit that crosses the patio boundary. The result shows full units, cut units and the face area removed by those cuts.
The default is 90-degree Herringbone, where the pattern axes remain aligned with the patio. Select 45-degree Herringbone to rotate the field diagonally. Both choices use the same patio, paver and material engine, which makes the quantities directly comparable instead of relying on two unrelated rule-of-thumb calculators.
Is 45-degree herringbone more wasteful?
It often produces more boundary cutting on rectangular patios because diagonal courses meet all four edges at an angle. More intersections can mean more partial units and more saw work. However, no fixed percentage is correct for every project. A dimension that fits one repeating module neatly can outperform a slightly smaller patio with awkward slivers.
The geometric waste result measures the unused face area from the generated edge pieces. Recommended purchase allowance is separate. Even if calculated cut waste is modest, herringbone installation may justify a larger buffer for breakage, rejected narrow cuts, color blending and spare units. Use the 5, 10 and 15 percent options to compare an ordering range.
Reading the generated plan
Whole pavers appear in a neutral stone color and cut pavers in a warmer accent. Hide the cuts to inspect the uninterrupted field or show them to review the perimeter workload. Dimensions describe the outside patio size; the grid is a visual reference only. Drag the drawing to pan, use plus and minus to zoom, and choose Fit to restore the full boundary.
For a 12 by 20 foot patio and 4 by 8 inch pavers, generate 90 degrees first and note the cut count. Change only the pattern to 45 degrees. The new count reflects different clipping geometry, while base and bedding volumes remain tied to the unchanged patio area. Export both versions if you want to compare them with an installer.
Installation planning limits
The tool treats every clipped boundary unit as one purchased paver and does not automatically nest reusable offcuts. It also does not add a soldier-course border, select a starting line, enforce a minimum cut width, include saw kerf or model three-dimensional grades. Those choices depend on the site and installer. The drawing is a quantity and visual planning aid, not a laying specification.
The current planner supports rectangular and L-shaped patios with straight edges. Supported shapes are an outer rectangle, plus an optional screen-bottom-right cutout for an L-shape. Current limitations: it does not optimize offcut reuse, draw curves, create arbitrary polygons, estimate labor, or replace an installer’s site survey. A cut paver is counted as one purchased paver even when part of it is discarded. Always compare the plan with product-specific laying instructions and local construction requirements.
Set out herringbone carefully
The generated field helps with quantity comparison, but physical set-out still needs a reliable baseline. Installers commonly establish perpendicular control lines and dry-lay a representative section before cutting the perimeter. Small alignment errors can compound through a herringbone field, especially across a long diagonal. Check the selected paver’s dimensional tolerance, spacer method and recommended joint before finalizing the plan. If a border will frame the field, calculate the interior field dimensions after the border width is known; the current planner does not create that border automatically, so the patio boundary represents the field being generated.

How much waste does a herringbone pattern create?
There is no universal percentage. Generate the actual dimensions to estimate boundary waste, then add a separate purchase allowance for site losses.
Is 45-degree herringbone more wasteful?
It commonly creates more angled boundary cuts than a 90-degree layout, but exact patio and paver dimensions determine the difference.
Can I switch between 90 and 45 degrees?

Does the calculator reuse herringbone offcuts?
