Longer sheets are not automatically better
A 4×12 sheet can reduce joints on a 12-foot wall, or it can create awkward leftovers on a 10-foot wall. This calculator uses the same placement engine for 4×8, 4×9, 4×10 and 4×12 so the comparison is about your dimensions, not a catalog rule of thumb.
Use Auto, then lock Horizontal or Vertical if the hang direction is already decided on site.
Example
On a 16 by 9 foot wall, compare 4×8 against 4×12. Check purchased sheets, cut count and seam length before assuming the longer board is cheaper to hang.
BuildPlot provides planning estimates and layout assistance. Actual installation requirements depend on framing, product specifications, local building codes, fire-rated assemblies, site conditions and manufacturer instructions. The current planner supports rectangular rooms and single walls. Current limitations: it does not check fire ratings, reuse offcuts across walls, or replace a contractor takeoff.
Common questions
Drywall planning FAQ
How many 4x8 drywall sheets do I need?

Yes. Choose Custom and enter width and length.
Does thickness change the sheet count?
No. Thickness and type are recorded for the summary and PDF only.
