Quantity from geometry, not from 32 sq ft

A typical drywall calculator divides wall area by the face of a 4×8 sheet and adds a percentage. That misses orientation, extra sheets created by leftover strips, and openings that still consume a full board. This calculator runs the same layout engine as the planner, then totals full sheets, cut sheets and purchase allowance.

Tape is estimated from calculated seam length, not from square footage alone. Compound and fasteners use editable assumptions so you can match a product coverage chart without pretending BuildPlot inspected the job.

Example

A 12 by 14 by 8 foot room with 4×8 sheets produces four walls and a ceiling. Compare Auto against a forced horizontal hang if you want fewer seams on the long walls. Then open the full planner to see which wall is driving the cut count.

BuildPlot provides planning estimates and layout assistance. Actual installation requirements depend on framing, product specifications, local building codes, fire-rated assemblies, site conditions and manufacturer instructions. The current planner supports rectangular rooms and single walls. Current limitations: it does not check fire ratings, reuse offcuts across walls, or replace a contractor takeoff.

How much drywall do I need for a 12x12 room?

It depends on ceiling height, openings and sheet length. Enter the room and generate the layout rather than using a single square-foot rule.

Does the calculator include the ceiling?

Yes in Room mode. Single-wall mode plans one surface only.

How is joint tape estimated?

From the seam length in the generated layout, plus the tape reserve percentage in Material assumptions.

Are screw counts a code requirement?

No. They follow the screws-per-sheet assumption you enter.
