Two kinds of drywall waste
Geometric waste is the unused face area of purchased sheets after clipping to the wall and subtracting openings. Purchase allowance is extra stock for breakage, rejected narrow cuts and future repairs. BuildPlot keeps them separate so a tidy rectangular wall is not ordered like a messy one.
Offcuts wider than 12 inches in both directions are listed as reusable. The current planner does not automatically move a leftover from Wall A onto Wall B.
Example
A 12 by 8 foot wall hung horizontally with 4×8 sheets buys four boards and wastes about a quarter of the purchased face area. Hung vertically it can use three full boards. That difference is the point of generating the layout.
BuildPlot provides planning estimates and layout assistance. Actual installation requirements depend on framing, product specifications, local building codes, fire-rated assemblies, site conditions and manufacturer instructions. The current planner supports rectangular rooms and single walls. Current limitations: it does not check fire ratings, reuse offcuts across walls, or replace a contractor takeoff.

Is 10% drywall waste enough?
It is a common allowance, not a universal answer. Use geometric waste as evidence, then pick 5, 10 or 15 percent for site losses.
Do openings count as waste?
The opening area is not installed, but the sheet it cuts through is still purchased. That unused face contributes to geometric waste.
Can leftover pieces be reused?
Reusable offcuts are listed. The purchase count is not reduced by nesting them on another surface.
Why is waste different for horizontal and vertical?
The leftover strips change when the long edge of the sheet changes direction.
