Calculate quantity from the layout

A basic paver calculator multiplies patio width by length, divides by the face area of one paver and adds a percentage. That is a useful check, but it assumes every square inch of purchased material transfers perfectly to the finished surface. Real patios have boundaries, joints and laying patterns. This calculator models those conditions by placing individual pavers and clipping them at the edge.

Enter the outside patio dimensions and choose feet or metres. For an L-shape, describe the rectangular cutout. Then select a preset such as 4 by 8, 6 by 9 or 12 by 24 inches, or enter a custom paver in inches, centimetres or millimetres. The live result reports whole pavers, cut pavers and the total purchase recommendation.

Quantity, geometric waste and purchase allowance

Three numbers answer different questions. Whole pieces are installed without boundary clipping. Cut pieces are pavers that cross the patio edge; the current planner counts each one as a purchased unit even if only part is used. Geometric waste is the area removed from those edge pieces compared with their original face area. It responds to the exact dimensions and pattern orientation.

The purchase allowance is an additional buffer applied after the geometric layout count. Choose 5, 10 or 15 percent for breakage, unusable cuts, color blending and spare pavers for later repairs. Keeping this allowance separate prevents a misleading claim that a layout model can predict every site loss. Ask your supplier whether unopened full packs can be returned before rounding to pack quantities.

Base and bedding calculations

Base volume is patio area multiplied by the depth you enter. The default four inches is a planning starting point, not a universal specification. Soil, drainage, climate, vehicle loads, local practice and the paver manufacturer can require a different excavation and compacted base depth. Results are shown in cubic feet, cubic yards and cubic metres so you can discuss bulk material in the units your supplier uses.

Bedding sand is calculated separately with a default one-inch depth. The polymeric sand figure is deliberately labeled approximate because joint depth, paver bevel, product coverage and compaction change real consumption. Use the manufacturer’s coverage chart for ordering final bags.

Example and limitations

Suppose a patio is 10 by 10 feet and uses 4 by 8 inch pavers in Running Bond with a one-eighth inch joint. The theoretical area division is only a baseline. The generated rows reveal alternating offsets and identify the edge pieces that must be cut. Changing to Stack Bond aligns the vertical joints and can change which boundary pavers are partial even though the square footage stays at 100.

The current planner supports rectangular and L-shaped patios with straight edges. Supported shapes are an outer rectangle, plus an optional screen-bottom-right cutout for an L-shape. Current limitations: it does not optimize offcut reuse, draw curves, create arbitrary polygons, estimate labor, or replace an installer’s site survey. A cut paver is counted as one purchased paver even when part of it is discarded. Always compare the plan with product-specific laying instructions and local construction requirements.

Turn the result into an order

Take the recommended piece count to the supplier and ask how the product is packaged. Pavers may be sold by piece, layer, square foot or full pallet, and mixed-size products can have their own coverage rules. Round up to the available pack quantity rather than rounding the calculator down. Confirm whether caps, edge units or border pavers are separate products; the current planner calculates only the field paver you enter. Keep a small labeled reserve from the same production lot when future stain, breakage or utility work could make an exact color match difficult.

How do I calculate pavers for a patio?

Should cut pavers count as full pavers?

For conservative purchasing, yes. Each boundary piece is counted as one purchased paver; offcuts are not automatically reused elsewhere.

How thick should the paver base be?

It depends on soil, drainage, climate, loading and local requirements. Use the editable depth for planning, then confirm it with manufacturer guidance and a qualified local installer.

Does changing joint width change the count?

It can. Wider joints increase the repeating spacing between pavers and may change both row count and edge cuts.
